European Colonists and Their Viciousness Essay

William Penn was one example of a leading colonist that maintained good relations with the Native Americans. There were other leaders that did likewise. However, most of the European colonists didn’t follow this pattern as John Winthrop or Hernando Cortez. These leaders mistreated the Native Americans and used them like objects. One of the reasons that made some Europeans abuse of the Native Americans was that they didn’t think of the Native Americans as humans but more as animals or savages. Therefore, they thought they could do anything of them and even kill them if they needed to. That was true for the English colonists who saw the Native Americans the same way they saw the Irish. For this reason, they would exploit them and use them as slaves. They even destroyed their villages and kidnapped their children for vengeance. One thing that the English colonists didn’t do that differentiated them from the Spaniards was that they didn’t reproduce with the Native Americans because they saw it as reproducing with an animal. Yet, this wasn’t the only reason of this behavior among the Native Americans. Another reason for which the colonists took advantage of the Native Americans was power. At this time, power was very important for everybody. The amount of power you had leaded your life. Of course, when someone had power, he always wanted more and that was so for the kings and queens. When Christopher Columbus told Queen Isabella that the Tainos were weak, innocent and that it would be easy to control them, the queen saw a good opportunity of expanding her power in America and improving her wealth. She decided that she would make slaves out of the Native Americans and that she would impose them her religion. Of course anyone who would resist would be killed. This is how slavery started in America. Another cause of this behavior was gold. Multiple trips to America had for goal to find gold. The European colonists thought that, now that they found this new land, they would be able to reap the benefits of the gold resting on it. However, when the colonists arrived, the Native Americans were already there with the gold. But the colonists had evil interests; once they saw gold, they would be able to do anything to get it. That is what happened with the â€Å"conquistador† Hernando Cortez and his army when they arrived to Tenochtitlan, the Aztecs’ capital. When they saw this city, they got bewitched by the gold used to build it. This obsession led to the revolution of the Aztecs against the â€Å"conquistadores†. The battle ended with most of the Aztecs killed including their chief. The last source of the colonists’ viciousness was their territories. When America was first discovered by Christopher Columbus, all the European countries fought to extend their lands. However, the Native Americans were an obstacle for the expansion of their colonization. The countries thought that the lands belonged to all different tribes of Native Americans. Therefore, the only way to get the lands was to take over the Native Americans and take possessions of their lands. This is again an example of Hernando Cortez’s conquest of America for Spain. When he arrived in America, Hernando killed every Native American tribe he found on his way to then claim their lands to Spain. The only reason he didn’t kill some of them was to have better chances to defeat the Aztecs. But Cortez wasn’t the only colonist to do this to Native Americans and some might have been even crueler than he had. In conclusion, the Europeans didn’t follow the pattern of good relations with Native Americans as William Penn and other European leaders because of dehumanization, power, gold and land. These are the four facts that most of the European colonists thought were worth killing a very important amount of innocent people and that caused them to offer viciousness instead of kindness to the Native Americans who hadn’t done anything wrong to them.

It's nothing like July 21, 1861; it's quiet. Everyone in Washington and the surrounding area had heard talk of the troops gathering outside Manassas Junction, Virginia. Expectations ran high that the Union troops would quickly send their Confederate brothers running for the hills. Buggies of spectators traveled the thirty miles from Washington to see the battle. Picnic baskets were opened and folks prepared to watch the show. No one expected what they saw. This wasn't one of the biggest battles of the war, but it was the formal opening for both sides. Of the 32,500 Confederate soldiers, 1,982 of them became casualties, while the Union counted 2,896 casualties from 35,000 troops. Many thought this would quickly settle the dispute; all it did was prepare everyone for a long war and move the Federal government into action. Another major battle took place at Shiloh. Isn't it strange that a battle as bloody as the battle at Shiloh would begin on a Sunday morning and be named for a country church near the battlefield? Maybe the soldiers didn't even see the irony. Then again, maybe someone did. The Union soldiers weren't prepared for the charge of their Confederate brothers. Many of the Union troops were untrained and undisciplined, but as in so many battles of war, mundane events served to alter the future. General Albert S. Johnston, CSA, had given his commanding generals orders to attack ... ...uring the Peninsula Campaign in 1862. He impressed his commanding general, Major General George McClellan, and steadily made rank afterward. Meade commanded a division at Antietam and the V Corps at Chancellorsville. Lincoln chose Meade to replace Major General Joseph Hooker in June 1863, as the commander of the Army of the Potomac. Meade was criticized for not pursuing the Rebel forces after the battle, but that didn't shake Lincoln's faith in Meade. Meade held command of the Army of the Potomac until the end of the war and became the most successful and longest serving Union commander. There were many battles that followed the battle of Gettysburg. Some were more important than others, but all played a part in the outcome of the war. The victories by the Union at Petersburg and Richmond led General Robert E. Lee to surrender at Appomattox. This effectively brought the most horrifying war in American History to an end. Many American soldiers died but not in vein. They fought for our country and to help hold it together. These battles and many more just show us how horrible war was, but without these battles America wouldn’t be what it is today, a unified and free country.

The Concept of Communication Style Essays -- Interpersonal Communicati

The Concept of Communication Style The concept of communication style has been defined by Rober Norton as "the way one verbally, nonverbally, and para verbally interacts to signal how literal meaning should be taken, interpreted, filtered, or understood"(1996.p.229) In this, Norton has identified nine communicator styles. A persons style may be dominant, dramatic, contentious, animated ,impression leaving, relaxed, open, or friendly. These dimensions measure how you interact in various situations. For example, if I speak frequently and try to control the converstaion, you might assume that I am dominant in my communicator style. In determining my own commuication style I had a questionnaire completed by both a friend, acquaintance , as well as completing one myself. The friend that I chose was my room mate Ryan Seslow. . Ryan and I have been friends since highschool so he knows me very well. The person that I chose to complete the acquaintance section was my friend Leslie Margasak. Leslie is my girlfriends roommate therefore our communication is somewhat limited. Through the following research and analysis I have created a table (Table:1) that shows the means for my friend aquaitance, and myself. The summaries and findings in which I calculated provided me with insight of my dominant yet friendly communication style. It also provided me with a different perspective as to how other people interpret my communication habits. For example, the mean for myself on the category "relaxed" scored a 1.3. However, my friends mean was 3.1 and my acquaintance was 5.1. Through the text of Interpersonal Communication, I was able to determine that this fluctuation has to do with the self concept theory. "Self -concept is defined as each person's own subjective view or image of him or herself as a person" (tremont p.213) In my opinion I do not see myself as relaxed(1.3), but my friend does as well as acquaintance. I do not see as relaxed as the others indicated in the table. Usually I feel rather more stressed and even a little nervous rather than relaxed when communicating. One calculation in which which I noticed to have simmialr realuts was based on the means for being dramtic. I scored high in this category on all three surveys.(see table:1) When a person is classified as dramatic it refers that the person "likes to act ... ...do so by staying relaxed. I scored a relatively low mean in the openess category and this is an area I would like to change. The means showed that I am not open nor am I percieved to be a very open person. Overall my communication style is very dominant, dramatic and friendly. Howvevr, despite this though Im not a very open person. I feel that my communication style does allow me to get people to listen to me closely becayse of my dramatics or ability to tell srotires in vivid detail and picturesqe. I am animated and expressive when I feel the need to emphasize a point or statement. This also helps my communication confidence since I know now that what I say often does an considerable impact on those who I am communicating with. In conclusion I am very pleased with the data which I recorded. I now understand my communciation style better yet at the same time have located areas in which I can begin to improve on. 1. Compare and contrast each of the organizational structures from your reading. There are two organizational structures mentioned in text; Hierarchical Organizational Structure and Organic Organizational Structure with two possibilities of their structures being one of that of vertical or horizontal. The hierarchical organizational structure consists of a â€Å"set of formal task and formal relationships† (Daft, 2012). The military is an example of a form of hierarchical organizational structure. It is a structure that is clearly stated of â€Å"powers and authority and with a developed bureaucratic control system† (Wk3, Lec. pg. 2, 2012). This control system instills power and authority through rules, policies, programs and training manuals (Wk3, Lec. pg. 2, 2012). In comparison, a hierarchical organizational structure as with an organic organizational structure, they both possess upper levels of management that are responsible for making â€Å"major decisions† (Wk3, Lec. Sum., 2012). Organic organizational structures, although are similar in comparison to hierarchical organizational structures in the since of upper management making key decisions, there are many differences in contrast to the hierarchical organizational structures (Wk3, Lec. pg. 2, 2012). Most large organizations tend to be organic due to the complexity of technology that have more emphasis on detailed work being assigned and to who, and who will concentrate more on â€Å"decision – making authority† (Zanzi, 1987). In a hierarchical organizational structure continuum, â€Å"taking risk† is not encouraged as it could mean the life or death of someone (Wk3, Lec. pg. 2, 2012). However, in the organic organizational structure, risk are taken every day and in fact are commonly encouraged (Wk3, Lec. pg. 2, 2012). 2. If you were to choose one structure in which to work, which would you choose and why? I believe I would choose the hierarchal organizational structure. To me the organic organizational structure could be over burdensome to just one or a few individuals who may be in control of more than one group of employees or departments. When the development of the hierarchical organizational structure is implemented, then you have many different means in which to carry out many different functions and distribute the work to. With this structure I can develop a plan easier and know it will be carried out on time, accurately and see the results and get reports from the structure below. It’s like a baseball team; it takes all 9 players to cover the field cause you never know in which direction the ball will be hit to. Covering virtually every aspect will assure that the ball is almost always controlled ant the play is made. 3. Compare the organizational structures of Google and Wal-Mart. Google has an organizational structure that once seemed hierarchical in nature and characteristics when it first began, thus mimicking business organizational structure in order for it to get off the ground. The use of fast forward, concurrent and feedback controls were in place as well. However, Google has recently â€Å"minimized hierarchy and maximized what can be done at the individual contributing level† (Mohamed, 2006). Google tend to allow its employees the opportunity to contribute new innovative ideas to the company. Innovation through the ranks is the norm now at Google. At Wal-Mart, they too have built a strong market in the online business market (virtual), (Mmr, 2011). With its move into the virtual market place, as with Google, organic, yet more horizontal organizational structure so too is Wal-Mart’s online presents (Mmr, 2011). 4. Explain what types of control processes might be found in each of the organizational structures. There are three control processes; Feed forward, Concurrent and Feed Back. It is noted that â€Å"all three systems of controls are essentials to successful management and use resources for meeting goals† (Wk3, Lec. Pg. 1 2012). If this is the case, then we must consider that each control has a place in which it must monitor. With Feed forward controls, this action begins before a new product or a program or plan is implemented to gain â€Å"feedback in advance† (Wk3, Lec. pg. 1, 2012), this in order to make plans towards the start of a new product, plan or goal. With concurrent controls, this is to gain knowledge of how the new product, plan or goal is coming along, working or functioning during its progress or after it’s implemented. Then with the feedback controls, we get the product, plan or goal results and are able to make adjustments, adaptations to or change our product, plan or goal to operate the way it was originally designed to do so (Wk3, Lec. pg. 1, 2012). 5. Describe what types of quality management processes might be found in each of the organizational structures. First, I believe we have to understand what control is in order to find the quality management process found in each organizational structure. Monitoring activities within the organization based on the â€Å"expectations established in plans† (Daft, 2012) determine organizational controls. Controls establish how those things are handled and not dominance (Wk3, Lec. pg. 1, 2012).. Standards, methods and how those are measured determine quality. Once all these line up you hve what is referred to as a â€Å"balance scorecard† (Daft, 2012). In the hierarchical organizational structure, the type of quality management found there would be best optimized by using total quality management, as with the military. Total quality management improves the originations performance at every level. Since the hierarchal organizational structure is more vertical in characteristics, then it will have more of a need for improvements, because there are more levels that need controls (Daft, 2012). As with organic organizational structures, perhaps a quality management process type best for this structure would be something like â€Å"ISO (000† (Daft, 2012). When I worked at Allied Chemical, years ago, Allied traded and did business on an international scale. Its standard of quality wasn’t restricted to that of just the United States. It had to comply with foreign standards as well and we were ISO 9000 certified. I had to take extra training classes in quality management because of the international standards that were imposed on our products that were sold abroad. Also, with the organization I chose, Google, which is an organic organizational structure, Google also operates on an international scale. So a good example would be the type of quality found in the ISO 9000 certification process which is outlined by the â€Å"International Organization for Standards† (Daft, 2012). Children should have the right to be able to know who their birth parents are if they choose to do so. If children do not want to know who their birth parents are then they probably have a reason behind it. Children who do not know who their birth parents are, should find out who they are so that they can have contact with them.Some children are absolutely accurate that they do not want to know about who their birth parents are, but on the other hand some children do want to figure out who their birth parents are. All children that are adopted should have the right to find out who their biological parents are. There are so many reasons why a child should find out who their biological parents are so that they know what they are going to face later on in life. For a children to know who their biological parents are can be hel pful for both the child and their biological parents.If the child is to grow up and have a disease then the child should know what kind of disease that they are going to face throughout their life. It is important the the child should know about the medical and even the genetic history of their family. If the child was to not know what kind of medical problems they have, then they would not have an idea about what they have. This is important for the child to know so that way they can know what they are up against. Medical problems are an important factor for the child to know about so that they do not end up being sick or even worse end up in the hospital.The children not knowing what kind of medical condition they have can lead to complications. The child can be affected greatly from this because it could cause them to not be able to do the things that they did before. There is times when it does not affect them too bad, but at times it can cause something serious. There is so man y reasons why a child should not find out who their biological parents are, like for instance the parents could be harmful. If the child was being abused then the parents should not have the right to see the child. When the child obtains this information then they might think that there should be revenge.This could be avoided if the adoptive parents do not allow the child to have contact with the child. Therefore the whereabouts and their information should be kept away from the biological parents, but kept secretly by the adoptive parents. When the child wants to find their biological parents it can sometimes make them feel betrayed. Like for instance the care of the child by the adoptive parents could have involved money, social matters, and even time for the child. The foster parents have as much right as the biological parents to be parents of the adoptive child.This can occur for the matter of fact that adoption involves the transfer of rights from the foster parents to the bio logical parents. The transfer is not like a contract because it does not end when the child becomes grown up, but goes throughout their entire life Child adoption can be controversial because it requires time to handle and address things in order to take care of effective questions that may come up. Adoption is the practice where rights from the biological parents of their child are transferred permanently to the adoptive parents, which are known also as the foster parents.In some countries adoption undergoes many precautions so that they can ensure that the adoptive parents have a reason for why they want to adopt a child. Adoption is different because the biological parents do not interfere with the child as they grow up. In the Unites States it is said that about one hundred and twenty thousand cases of child adoption occur each year. Adoption has committed to many different reasons form whether the biological parents cannot care for the child to where they can not provide certai n needs for the child.Since adoption includes the transfer of rights from biological parents to the foster parents the child does not know if they are adopted or not. This is unless that the adoptive parents make the decision to decide whether to tell the child that they are adopted. Background of the study Before the advent of the washing machine, apart from watercourses, laundry shop was also done in communal or public washhouses, water was channeled from a river or spring and fed into a building or outbuilding built specifically for laundry purposes and often containing two basins – one for washing and other for rinsing – through which the water was constantly flowing, as well as a stone lip inclined towards the water against which the washers could beat the clothes. Such facilities were much more comfortable than washing in a watercourse because the launderers could work standing-up instead of on their knees, and were protected from inclement weather by walls and a roof.
